My oven is gas. Every self-cleaning oven I've ever
see was electric.

I think the war on drugs may have had something to do
with the disappearance of oven cleaner. Didn't that
contain a lot of lye? Red Devil lye has disappeared
from stores because it is used in making amphetamine
or something.
