Default does any know what this thing is?

I wasn't admonishing you, just curious why you would post that here. You
might get a wider response from rec.antique.radio+phono. Despite that
it's name is "antique", they cover a broad range of other electronic
issues.

BTW, you don't have to subscribe to a group to read and post there.

FWIW, I'm fairly sure my answer is correct.
