Umm, undoubtedly other things than water absorb microwaves
of the same frequencies, though the spectral distribution
is different. The article you are responding to is sufficiently
sloppy in its wording that one _might_ get the idea that the OP
thinks _only_ water absorbs the microwaves. But I read it as
only noting a preferential absorption by water (which I think
is correct).

However, you might be interested in an experiment in which
you place two cups, one with water and one with oil and both
at room temperature, in a microwave and run it for various
(short! no need to invoke your disaster scenario!) times, and
compare the temperatures afterwards...
