I did spend time in the kitchen with my mom. I also spent time in their
kitchens with my aunts. My mother encouraged me to experiment in her
kitchen. I learned to bake a cake from scratch by age 11. There were
some disasters, but she had the patience of a saint. Through my
experimentation, I learned the importance of measuring properly for
baking and how to measure accurately. It surprises me to learn how few
people know that liquid measures and dry measures are different.

There were lots of spices in the pantry. When I was a little girl, I
would taste all the spices. I think I developed a sense of what they
would go with from that experience.

Mom always invited me into the kitchen to "keep her company" while she
cooked. I think I learned a whole lot by just watching her.

Texas Janet, missing her mom.
