I don't have to, but if I'm not going to, I don't buy it. I recognize
that my food-safety neuroses are neurotic, but I figure it doesn't hurt
anything if I just don't buy stuff that I'm iffy about, and one of the
things I'm iffy about is eating meat that's past its date.
We eat so little meat that it's not really an issue. I just bought 15
chicken thighs for 99 cents a pound, and that will last us approximately
two months, because I make 3-4 thighs for a meal, and we eat chicken
maybe once every two weeks, not counting things like our Solstice party.
(For the solstice party, I ended up making something like 60 or 70
thighs, and we've been eating the leftovers for two days. James makes
the BEST chicken salad.)
