Maybe some unkind person sold you some dirt instead of beetroots.
Normal beetroots taste like beetroots to people with normal tastebuds.

However, this begs a question on whether there is some dirt somewhere
that tastes like beetroots. Apparently, some people on this newsgroup
have a lot of experience in dirt consumption, so maybe they can answer
this question.
