Saturday's festivities
On Saturday we did our bit to support the local economy and went
downtown. First order of business (after a trip to the camera store)
was lunch. Pike Place Market was jammed with tourists, so lunch at the
Athenian Inn was not an option. So we wound up at Café Campagne for
brunch. I had an omelet with herbs and goat cheese, SO had gravlax.
[BTW, Café Campagne and its upscale sister, Campagne, have dueling
Bastille Day parties next week. Campagne is having a Royalist prix fixe
menu, whereas Café Campagne is representing the peasants. My next door
neighbor and I may join the peasants. Liberté, égalité, et vin.]
After brunch we hit Sur La Table to look for a grilling basket for fish.
No luck. I saw a plank grilling cookbook that looked interesting, but
didn't meet my price point for cookbooks. Then we walked down to
Spanish Table. We've had very good luck buying wines there. We got two
bottles of garnacha, plus some dried, cured chorizo for paella. Back up
the hill to Caffe D'Arte for our caffeine fix. We moseyed down to
Pioneer Square to Elliott Bay Books, to pick up some Portland and Oregon
guidebooks for our trip later this month. Just for grins, I went
upstairs to the bargain books section and found the plank grilling
cookbook for about 1/3 of the price Surly Table wanted. Sold!
Before we headed home, we went ISO Salumi. This is the place Mario
Batali's dad founded, which makes and serves Italian cured meats. They
were closed (only open Tuesday to Friday), but we looked at the menu and
drooled. It might be worth playing hooky one day.
Just another weekend in Foodie Paradise.
