It actually uses less water than hand washing.

My first fifth wheel trailer that we lived in had a little Sears
apartment-sized dishwasher. I used it when we didn't have a sewer hookup
at an RV site because it really saved water.

I have a septic system here at my house and I use the dishwasher all the
time. So do our neighbors who are also on septic.
