My brother was unexpectedly (to me) in town, so the teenager and I went
to see him in San Francisco before he caught his flight home. We drove
around South San Francisco looking for a place to eat. I saw some real
promising choices -- Mexican seafood, an Italian place that looked nice,
a bunch of other non-chain possibilities in a cute part of town. He
said, "Let's get back on the freeway and find a real restaurant." On
the way between there and the airport, we went by a Lyon's, in the
parking lot of a La Quinta motel. He asked what it was, and I said,
"James says it's a half a notch above a Denny's." My brother said, "I
like Denny's -- let's go there." So we did. I mean, hey, his dime and
all. (My brother's rich, did I mention that? I was amused.)
Anyway, I had a perfectly fine free dinner of chicken-fried steak, two
sides of veggies (mixed veggies and green beans) and an anemic salad I
poked at a little and then left.
