A quick search of
http://www.senate.gov reveals the following ...
Senators Casey, Kennedy, and Obama introduced a bill "to help ensure
that service members and veterans are promptly reinstated in their
civilian jobs when they return from tours abroad." That bill was
introduced last month, so I don't know when it will be up for a vote.
The 2007 Higher Education Bill also included two proposals by Obama. One
provision will improve teacher training an the other will recognize and
fund predominantly black institutions.
In 2006, he introduced an act to expand college-level opportunities for
high school students using needs-based education grants.
This past spring, Obama cosponsored legislation to ban ALL earmarks for
the 2009 fiscal year.
If you go to
http://thomas.loc.gov and search for Obama using the drop
down box, you can also find a lot of information. Here are a few
examples of bills Obama sponsored:
S.115 to amend the Energy Policy Act of 2005 to repeal certain IRS tax
incentives for the oil and gas industry.
S.117 to improve benefits and services for members of the Armed Forces,
veterans of the Global War on Terrorism, and other veterans, to require
reports on the effects of the Global War on Terrorism, and for other
purposes.
S.443 A bill to state United States policy for Iraq, and for other
purposes.
S.1084 A bill to provide housing assistance for very low-income veterans.
S.1222 A bill to stop mortgage transactions which operate to promote
fraud, risk, abuse, and under-development, and for other purposes.
S.1790 A bill to make grants to carry out activities to prevent the
incidence of unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections
among teens in racial or ethnic minority or immigrant communities, and
for other purposes.
S.AMDT.923 to S.761 To expand the pipeline of individuals entering the
science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields to support
United States innovation and competitiveness. Most of the bills I
mentioned are still in progress, but this one was passed by the senate
unanimously, as were several other bills Obama sponsored.
Here is a bill that Obama introduced that passed unanimously.
S.AMDT.2692 to H.R.2764 To require a comprehensive nuclear threat
reduction and security plan.
Here's aother bill Obama introduced that passed unanimously. S.AMDT.4114
to S.2663 To require the Comptroller General of the United States
conduct a study and report on the effectiveness of authorities relating
to the safety of imported consumer products.
So this Republican smeer tactic of accusing Obama of not doing anything
during his time in the senate is easily proved wrong.
Here's a question for you. How exactly has McCain distinguished himself
as a political maverick these past eight years. According to McCain
himself, he has supported Bush around 90% of the time. That's hardly
being a maverick, its being part of the problem. Hell, McCain even voted
against two of his own bills!
Let's see what McCain's been up to in the senate, shall we?
S.RES.70 : A resolution expressing the sense of the Senate that the
Commander of Multinational Forces-Iraq and all United States personnel
under his command should receive from Congress the full support
necessary to carry out the United States mission in Iraq. This bill
hasn't been voted upon.
McCain sponsored some bills that I agree with, but believe it or not, in
the past couple of years, Obama introduced or sponsored more senate
bills then McCain, although of them are not particularly interesting,
such as sponsoring a bill to request a commemorative stamp. Nothing in
McCain's recent list of sponsored bills suggests he's a political
maverick, nothing at all.
By the way, if experience is so important, why didn't the Republicans
nominate McCain back in the 2000 primary to run for president? Instead,
the Republicans nominated a draft dodger with no experience in national
and international issues; a man who had never even traveled outside the
United States before. As we all know, Bush ran for president again in
2004 on the basis of four years of experience in the White House. We see
how much good Bush's first four years of experience have gotten us: a
financial disaster and a disaster in Iraq where we taxpayers have spent
$1 trillion dollars and sacrificed more American lives then were taken
by the terrorists on 9/11.
