My choice was not giving a damn. And I wouldn't if the meal tasted as I
expected it ought to.
Once I served pickled cutthroat trout at a party that I hosted. I had
caught the trout and pickled it. It was just another way of trying to
like this particular species of trout that lives in alkaline water. All
other methods had failed for my taste.
The finished trout pickling and my Christmas party coincided, so I
decided to put the big old jar out along with the other servings. It was
exotic enough that I thought my more adventurous friends might give it a
try.
From across the room, with a beer in my hand, I eyed the jar until the
first person fished out a serving. She took a bite and her eyes darted
around the party until she saw me looking at her. She made a motion of
sticking her finger down her throat. Of course, she was right. I'd tried
it. Word spread fast.
I didn't feel insulted. I felt gratified that between the two of us, we
had consumed six ounces of a six pound trout. Um... I forget what I did
with the rest of it.
