Now, yes. When I was a boy the budget for school meals was set at the
beginning of the school year, so in the fall for the winter term. By the
following summer, inflation had taken its toll and we had lettuce from the
garden and tinned sardines for a dinner "salad" about 3 times a week. The
very smell of sardines would make me retch for years. Then one magical
evening I had freshly caught sardines cooked on a driftwood fire on a beach
by the Bay of Biscay, and the trauma of my awful schooldays was reversed.
