Canned butternut squash? Hmmm, I've never seen that. I've seen canned
pumpkin (butternut is in that family). Sweet potatoes in a can are often
called "Yams" even though they technically aren't Yams. And they aren't the
same thing at all as squash. Squash grows above ground. Sweet potatoes are
root vegetables.
