I suspect that if those books aren't actually somewhat old, that they
are referencing old information. It's been years since sugar was "evil"
for diabetics. These things hang on for a long time, so I still see it
in places, including here. But I've taken classes in diabetic
management and diabetic nutrition (which of course are very closely
tied), and when a participant in the class mentions "sugar" in a
negative way, they get their knuckles rapped with a ruler, and reminded
that, for purposes of the class, sugar is just a form of carbohydrate,
and it just shares the "evil" of any big "C" food.
