About the taking of a small gift: depends. If it's an overnighter
and the hosts are putting on a major meal, like Xmas, a small gift is
a must in my book. If it's a come on over for hamburgers from the
guys I see all the time down the block, no.

The gift is something they will use soon and not have to store e.g.
wine or a nice candle.
