Back in the 60's and 70's FIAT provided turn-key auto plants to the USSR,
where the Russki version of the Fiat 124 was produced for many years as the
Lada. Fiat also did a similar deal with Poland, where the 124 was dubbed
the "Polski Fiat", and IIRC they also helped the Yugoslavs set up their
first auto plants, where various versions of Fiats were sold under the
"Zastava" name (the Zastava concern was also responsible for the notoriously
awful "Yugo", 'memba them?)...

So Fiats in various guises were the first widely available car for the
average "consumer" when some of the Communist Bloc countries were trying to
get their auto industries off the ground...

In fact the Russians built a whole new town around the Fiat plant, naming it
"Togliatti", in honor of a famous Italian Communist Party leader...
