Bogus addresses are used for a variety of reasons, Rose. Posters to
Usenet newsgroups expect replies to be posted to the group. Many
posters absolutely don't want email contact with posters to the group.

Phony email addresses are also used to reduce spam generated by
automatic address-harvesting software that will add the poster's email
address to a list of suckers to be sold to bulk mailers.

Note also that email addresses always end in dot-something; e.g., .com,
..net, .org, .mil, .edu, and I believe there are a few new ones, too, but
those are the most commonly used.
