well, i think i'm an older person, and i like things spelled out. i know
(i think) you don't like the cross-referencing in 'joy of cooking,' but
that seems to me to be a sensible approach. if you don't need that
material, just skim it - but it's nice to have it there, at least for the
first go-round.
