What happens when you ask your mom how to make an old family recipe

Which reminds me of an old story: guy's watching his wife prepare a
ham for dinner and asks her why she cut off the ends of the ham.
"Because my mother did it this way."
Later at his MIL's house, he asks her why she cuts the ends off the
ham.
"Because my mother did it that way."
He finally gets a chance to ask the question of Grandma, "Why do you
cut the ends off your ham?"
"Because it's the only way it will fit in the pan I have."
