I actually just worked out what it's cost us for using this service for
the last 4 years or so.

A whole US$0.02c a day. I'd say that's pretty reasonable. But I seem to
recall that you're not much interested in binaries, so why not just use
a freebie news service e.g. news.eternal-september.org (PKA
motzarella.org)?
