I wasn't so sure myself, so I looked it up in my dictionary. It has two
rather opposite meanings:

gratuitous

adjective

1 uncalled for; lacking good reason; unwarranted : gratuitous violence.
2 given or done free of charge : solicitors provide a form of gratuitous
legal advice.

I wonder what's happened to Greg? I used to enjoy his posts. There was
another poster who I killfiled. Greg could not resist replying to this
other poster, so I saw their posts when I didn't want to. So, after
some time, I killfiled Greg also. Since then, when I see Greg's post
quoted, I no longer see any interesting ones, just hate.

I'm sure Kili would be horrified at how posts about her often seem to
degenerate into stuff like this. I wouldn't be surprised if part of the
reason we don't see much of Alan here is because of these posts.
