Two Catholic doctors in South America were excommunicated for performing
an abortion. The female was carrying twins, and it was determined that
she could not carry them to term without significant risk due to her
size (she was nine years old). The pregnancy was, not surprisingly,
determined to be due to rape, since a girl that age can't give consent
(her stepfather had been having sex with her for three years). The
doctors appealed to the Vatican. They declined to intervene in local
affairs.
