Seed companies supply those signs and give the farmers a break on price
for planting different varieties in the same field. They usually plant
a couple of sections of each type, then compare harvests at the end of
the season. Farmers get cheap seeds (sometimes free), the seed
companies get a lot of free test acreage. Works out well for everyone.
