It's really very simple.

One picks the post one wants to reply to, hits Reply, a box comes up with
that post in it, and it's then up to the 'poster' to trim the post. Left
click, hold it down, and highlight what needs to be trimmed, then hit
Delete.

It's just pure laziness for them not to.

But that's what you get from a Google Groups poster.
