No longer true according to my last stop (which was some time ago). I
was chided by the officer for doing exactly that, and he told me I
should have kept going to the gas station on the corner on the next
block.

Now it's "Pull over to the nearest safe place", not "right away".

He let me go with a warning as I was not going THAT fast, and I
apologized to him for not paying attention which was true...
