Ah, well. Psychology 101 used to teach that a common (and
on USENET a very common
ego defence mechanism involves finding all
those faults in others -- usually with no objective evidence ever
provided by said fault-finder -- that are obvious
to others in the one complaining (thereby arguing for unconscious behaviour).
While the behaviour can be puzzling at first, it can be useful in
enumerating the qualities of the fault-finder -- especially as
it's usually an habitual behaviour. Projective techniques are a whole
bundle of diagnostic aids used in therapy or parlour tricks.
While the victim may not know why they do something or even how
they feel about a topic, if questions are phrased in terms of
"if this happened to your friend X, how do you think they'd feel"
answers can be surprisingly accurate and informative.
Finally, since the behaviour is (theoretically) one that the individual
has found to be re-assuring, pointing out what they are doing usually
causes anxiety and the behaviour goes into overdrive. And usually with no
acknowlegement the fault-finder is using an intimate knowledge of
themselves as a template. REpression rather than SUPpression.
