In any case your body digests starches into sugars, so if sugar is toxic
your body poisons itself.

An experiment you might find interesting is to put a little bit of bread
in your mouth, wet it with saliva, and swish it around for a while. You
should notice it getting sweet. That's an enzyme in saliva starting the
process of breaking the starch down into sugars.
