Same experience here. Ours is 45 years old and has reversible grids.
Waffles on one side, flat on the other for grilled sandwiches. Bought a new
one for Belgian waffles. It cooks them, but does not give a crispy outside
skin like the old one.
If I had the space, I'd get a Waring WW150. This is the commercial version
and sells for about $250. There is a home version that sells for about $65
but I cannot imagine it being as good or sturdy.
