Actually, maybe you *aren't* old fashioned! It's a pretty old concept.
We went to a wedding about a year ago. One of the photographers was
very pregnant. She was concerned that she would go into labor right
then and there. She brought her doula (birth assistant). The birth was
going to be in a hospital, and not one close to the wedding, so I think
a main function of the doula was to drive her to the hospital. The
photographer was pretty busy, but we talked to the doula quite a bit
(the wedding started much later than even most weddings). She was going
to be in charge of processing the placenta, and told us much more than I
really wanted to know.
