Bingo!

The trouble is, 40-50 years ago Europe was cheap for U.S. travelers.
Do you remember the "Europe on $5 a Day" travel guides? Times have
changed along with currency exchange rates, and foreign tourists find
the U.S. much cheaper than their own countries.

If people don't find travel exciting on its own (sightseeing, culture,
history, food, etc.) it's better that they stay home rather than spread
the old Ugly American stereotype.
