Default Saffron at Costco

My Swedish step-mom has a jar of saffron. It was jarring to see such a
large amount since we're used to seeing it sold in small envelopes. She
uses it for cookies and breads. She likes making cookies and breads
especially during this time of year.

I took a whiff of it and it was pretty heady stuff. I can't say it was
pleasant but I guess at the concentrations it's used the effect is quite
different. She said she got it at the "Apoteket" which as near as I can
guess is a pharmacy. It seems that Europeans can get saffron a lot
cheaper than we can. Now why the heck is that the case?
