I believe this group is active because it's a good group, but also
because it's subject, food, is a broad one, just as the subject of the
alt.obituary group, death, is a broad one. I respect this place as a
food group and as a place to get helpful answers to questions related
to food or cooking. Your right, this place moves fast. If you come
back two days later and your thread is still on the front page, or
even the second page, that means a lot of people are posting into it.
Of course, as in all groups, the original topic of the thread may no
longer be under discussion, but that's the way it goes, and frankly, I
like when threads drift off on their own without being forced - and I
don't believe the drift is forced - because if it were forced, people
would just drop out of it. Yep, it took me a while to get used to how
active this place is. Of course the old alt.comedy.standup group was
also very active. But then the clique of comics who started it got
all annoyed with newcomers they perceived to be "trolls", so they went
off and started a moderated group just for themselves, and it lasted
less than half a year. The old group also withered away but is still
alive in a very dead way. I guess in terms of the few groups I've
visited in my time, this is one of the most active and helpful,
although I will admit I don't mind going a bit off topic sometimes,
without forcing it on purpose or anything.
