Mine is metal and definitely not cheap, but it's sure worth it. I
love having a lid (keeps the odor to zero) and it's very convenient to
lift the lid by stepping on a pedal. It's the second model I've had.
The foot pedal fell off the first one after 8-10 years, but I just
stepped on the metal doohickey that did the real work. That gave up
the ghost after another 5-10 years and now the unit is in the basement
acting as a manually operated trash can

To be honest there really isn't an advantage. It is just nice to use and
once you get used to one you want to keep it.
