I've been sentimental about a lot of things, but a nut cracker isn't one of
them

I just cup the walnut in my hand and then whack the hand face down on
the table. It's a cute little stunt. Keep your hand cupped or you'll
break up the walnut halves. I don't care much for walnuts and can only
eat one or two. This works out fine because you can only do this trick 2
times before someone tells you to knock off that shit.

When I was in my 20's I gave my parents a wooden hinged nut bowl shaped like
a walnut. They liked to have nuts in the shell around the holidays. This
nut bowl had a big wooden mallet for whacking open walnuts. Of course you
don't really want to whack them unless you want broken up pieces of walnuts
and have to pick out pieces of shell. A gentle tap along the seam. Walnuts
crack open fairly easily.
