Having lived through the change I can tell you that I prefer Celsius. It
makes more sense for weather. Zero is the freezing point, and there is a
major difference between +1 and -1.

Perhaps, but since Volkswagons were a sort of novel car most owners
preferred to take them to VW dealers or garages that specialized in
them, and those shops would have the metric tools.

I don't know about mechanics in the US, but every mechanic I know up
here seems to be a tool junky. It gives them an excuse to buy more tools.
