I thought that part of the reason for the 2nd Amendment was to ensure
the existence of militia rather than having a standing army run by the
nasty federal government.
There are pros and cons with conscription and with volunteer armies. As
we saw in Vietnam, a lot of people weren't thrilled about being sent to
fight in a hot sticky jungle half way around the world. With a
volunteer army you get a corps of people who are truly interested in a
career in the military. You also get a lot of people who are in the
military because there was no other work available. Thanks to
employment equity you get people who try to opt out because, despite
having joined the army, they never expected to be sent to war....
wondering what happened to the woman who deserted and came to Canada
and had a couple kids. .... you can't send me over there to fight.. I am
a mother.
