I have two Tilley hats, a white one I wear in the summer for pretty much the
same reason as you (I am very fair skinned) and an olive one for the winter.
Not that we get as much sunshine as you probably do, but I like the shade
I wear tinted eye glasses for pretty much the same reason.

Not that ladies have to remove their hats in restaurants, but I always do
Occasionally when I am walking the dog, I see an old gentleman who wears a
cap and he always raises it and says 'good morning'. Old fashioned now but
very nice
