Yeah - we tell ppl to check the shelter website daily and for weeks on end. Not all surrenders happen within the first days. Also check the various adoption groups in the area, plus neighboring counties and city shelters.

Best thing is to have that pet chipped, and, that done, still take precautions against their getting out.
