Available Wattage. UK has 16A 240V as their general purpose circuits.
The US has 15A or 20A 120V as general purpose circuits. More Wattage =
more power available for faster heating, though efficiency remains the
same. What the folks in the UK don't seem to understand is that we have
plenty of 240V circuits in the US as well, just not as our general
purpose ones.

15A @ 120V = 1,800W
20A @ 120V = 2,400W
16A @ 240V = 3,840W
