They happen in the northern hemisphere as well of course, but normally
you need to be reasonably close to the poles. Here in Tasmania, they
are usually not super-strong but there are some lovely exceptions to
that rule. If you set a camera up on a tripod here, with long
exposures you can get some great photos though.
