That was the other part of his argument. If the land was developed with
luxury housing the tax revenues would be a lot higher. Some of those
revenues could be used to provide more low cost housing on more
affordable land. Call me elitist, but I really don't think that
subsidized housing should be located on prime property. People with
their own money are willing to pay more for it, and poor people are not
in a position to demand that sort of luxury.

Before the crack story broke he was faulted for getting away from the
office to coach a football team for underprivileged kids. The champagne
socialists on city council have no problem voting to spend the tax money
that other people pay to fund programs for the poor, but they don't want
to actually be exposed to the poor. Ford would rather invest his
personal time with them than to throw money at them.
