Indeed! Now I know why I thought the term appetizer had something to with
a main course. And yes, it is highly confusing... But to me, Hors d'oeuvre
mean finger foods - that one snacks on while sipping a pre-dinner
drink/cocktail. When I get to the table, I have a starter, then a main and
(if I have any room left) a dessert (or 'pudding' as it's known elsewhere)
