My kitchen is galley but open at the one end to the dining room.
We looked at this one house that had two drawbacks to me. The first that I
saw was that to get to the laundry, you had to walk through a bedroom and
into a bathroom that was off of the bedroom. The washer and dryer were in
that bathroom.
The next was that the kitchen was sort of in its own wing at one end of the
house. I can't even remember where the dining area was there. I don't
really remember a dining room or an eating area in the kitchen. Just this
dark, long and narrow kitchen with no windows in it that seemed to be living
off on its own. I stepped one foot into it and said, "No. Just no!"
I think perhaps that the house had been remodeled. But instead of doing it
like they did with this house and extending it towards the back, they just
kept adding on to one side, making a long and somewhat narrow house with an
even narrower kitchen at the one end.
Probably the weirdest of all that I saw while house hunting was the
musicians house. I got the idea that rather than a family living there, it
was just a bunch of assorted musicians. They actually had a little stage
right off of the kitchen and nothing that I could have really said was a
living room. There were two bedrooms at one end with a full bath and two at
the other with a full bath. Each bedroom had a tiny closet and a bed sort
of built in next to the wall with this bizarre storage area next to it. I
don't even want to try to remember it now as it was really odd and kind of
dirty looking. Someone had taken a piece of plain wood which in a few cases
had been painted rather badly and attached it at the top with hinges. It
all looked very clap trap.
Oddly enough the house was beautiful from the outside except that there was
no real porch and the door entry was up high. They had merely piled some
patio blocks and wood there so that you could get in.
And the kitchen? Although open, it was terribly small. They did have Pergo
flooring, granite countertops and lovely cupboards and fixtures but... The
whole front of it was open to the stage. Rather than a stove, there was one
of those countertop 4 burner things on the open area. I think that was
where the small sink was too. There was a wall oven and only upper
cupboards at the back of it. No pantry and only small linen closets at
either end of the place. So no real place to store food and really only
enough cupboards for some dishes and perhaps a few pots and pans. Reminded
me of the sort of kitchen that you might use if teaching a cooking class.
You also had to go up a few steps to get to the kitchen which I found was
odd. Up to go there. Up to go to the stage. Certainly wasn't the right
house for us.
