The volume of a cone is

pi * r^2 * h / 3

or, it is one third of a cylinder with the same radius and height.

To cook rice the ratio is 1 part rice to 2 parts water. You see where I'm
going with this.

Pour rice into the center of a pot, allowing it to pile up into a cone,
until the bottom of the cone touches the sides of the pot.

Then fill with water to the same height. The volume of rice is then half
the volume of water. No measuring needed.
