That was a bit of a revelation. We wanted a compact but versatile cooktop
to maximize counter space, so chose one with the cluster of knobs on top
rather than in front. That gave us the opportunity for an additional drawer,
but only a really shallow one. So, we said, what use is a really shallow
drawer? The light bulb finally turned on and the knives moved from a knife
block on the counter to the drawer. Other randomly useful *flat* things
were added (kitchen timers, scale, toothpicks, flame-tamer, etc.) and we
became very happy with the result :-)
