Thanks Julie! You brought back some good memories. I grew up in SoCal;
our cousins lived in Palmdale, and we inherited a swamp cooler from
them. It worked pretty well, although I recall my parents had a separate
window A/C unit in the master bedroom, which was at the other end of the
house.
Anyway, the swamp cooler did the job well enough. Of course, nowadays
you would have to worry about Legionnaire's disease, but back then that
was not an issue. I imagine that nowadays you can get additives for the
water to minimize this threat.
