The biggest question: is this a fresh ham steak, or a commercially cured
ham steak, or a country-style cured and smoked ham.

I suggest you call whoever sold you the 1/4 hog. They know the curing method
used. Some hams have to be cooked in water, then baked. Others just need to
be baked, and still others are fully cooked.
