I joined a civic club that had been trying to get me to join for a
decade and got to do stuff like drive a truck in a parade and build
school benches.

I agreed to help out a business competitor and learned a lot about
efficient business practices and honed my skills at connecting with
people. I used to think of these guys as the company with the most vile
practices in the state but you will learn a lot by getting closer to the
enemy. For one thing, you might find out that they're not really the
enemy. :-)
