For the round version that's probably OK. However, I recommend *strongly*
you get a square one. Square blocks do a much better job of containing
foods that tend to scurry away from you as you cut them (e.g. carrots,
celery, potatoes, etc.) With a round one you're likely to end up with bits
on the floor unless you're only using it for meat or bread. Still, the
square one is more convenient to work with even for these items because
it's less of a hassle to position foods.

As for what makes them better, they use a harder wood, with a much tighter
pack to the bonding structure of the pieces. The individual pieces are
better sized and shaped. The finish is also better. Finally, the square
blocks are slightly larger - not enormously much bigger but every square
inch of surface helps. Performance-wise, the net result of these factors
means you get a board which will survive more continuous cutting and
washing, particularly with large, bony cuts of meat requiring a fair amount
of force and heavy, extra-long chef's knives, or cleavers.
