My friend had a Karman Ghia - he had the standard VW passive heater system. That didn't work in the tropics very well. I shudder to think of having something like that where it really gets cold. The Corvair had a gasoline powered heater too. It had a separate ignition system with a spark plug and coil to fire it up. That's must have been a little noisy. It probably worked great though.
